I feel like keeping our pets and kids safe always wins this battle, no questions asked. That is why we came up with a Homemade Weed Killer Safe for Pets, Kids and Gardens!
We were tired of having to make the decision and let the weeds just do what they want to keep our pets and little ones safe in the yard. We have a 75lb+ dog and 20lb+ cat that both love lounging in the backyard.
The answer we needed for so long was finally answered. We started making our own all natural weed killer. Little did we know until we did some research we already had all the ingredients we needed in our house to make it. The supplies needed for this are very minimal.

Supplies needed to make homemade weed killer
I was not kidding when I said you could have everything you need already in your home. You could have it made by the time you finish reading this.
The only thing you may not have one hand is a Garden Sprayer. They are affordable and here are a couple different ones from Amazon: 1 Gallon Garden Sprayer and Walmart: 1 Gallon Garden Sprayer. These are the best prices I could find for these garden sprayers online.
If you do have a garden Sprayer and all the ingredients then you are ready to make your own homemade weed killer in less than 5 minutes!
Supplies Needed to make homemade weed killer
- Garden Sprayer (Walmart / Amazon)
- 48oz White Distilled Household Vinegar
- 2 tsp. Liquid Dish Soap (Glass Oil Bottle Dispenser)
- 2/3 c. Lemon Juice
- Funnel (love this funnel, it collapses flat)
- Water
- Leather Palm Garden Gloves
Step-by-Step how to make homemade DIY weed killer
The best part about this Easy Homemade Weed Killer Safe for Pets and Vegetable Garden is that you can make it in less than 5 minutes. It is a quick mix of ingredients and you are ready to start neutralizing those weeds.
- Measure out all of your ingredients
- Pour all of ingredients into a pump sprayer
- Gently stir to help incorporate all ingredients together
You are ready to get rid of those unwanted weeds the safe way!!!
It’s important to note that this method does not work as fast as your traditional commercial weed killers, but, you trade a little more time to wait for the safety of making sure your family and home is safer by not using those harmful chemicals. For us, that’s a great trade off!
How to use your own natural weed killer
Make sure to apply on a hot sunny day and low wind day. It’s a good idea to avoid any over spray onto any nearby plants you don’t want it to kill. This will kill any plant in your garden beds it comes into contact with or severely damage it.
Spray before the sun is at its hottest, the sun will help burn the weed with the mixture on it. Leave it alone for a couple days and you should come back to the treated area with dying weeds.
You can reapply if needed for those harder to kill weeds. Our nightmare weed growth in early spring is crab grass and for best results we do two treatments. But, once the crab grass patches are dead it is gone for good. We also like to pull up any lawn weeds we kill that we can so there is less chance of their roots surviving and possibly coming back.
I know, we were just talking about killing the weeds with our eco-friendly weed killer and being done. You can leave some weeds to just die off for good after you spray them, but sometimes you have weeds that are so hard to get rid of and you are better off just pulling them, making sure you take them and their root systems out for good. If you don’t get rid of their root system you may just drive yourself crazy constantly treating the same weeds over and over again.
But, wait…what was that about pulling the weeds once they are dead?
Let’s be real this is hands down the most daunting part of weed control, the hand pulling.
Don’t stress, we feel the same way and don’t want to spend all of our free time pulling weeds. If we don’t have to hand pull weeds we are not going to either!
We like to use leather palm garden gloves to keep our hands safe from bugs and thorns when doing any yard work!

The real MVP is this Grandpa’s Weeder, it is hands down the best way to remove the weeds from the ground once they are dead. This weed puller has been a game changer for us and has saved our knees and backs time and time again. We will always use our weed puller for any unwanted plants in our lawn!

I just wish we would have found this natural alternative sooner. Not only do we save a ton of money by not buying those store-bought weed killers, we also know our furry friends, beautiful garden and little one have no access to those harsh chemicals. They can continue to be out in their yard whenever they want and we don’t have to worry about them being exposed to toxic chemicals.
