DIY Vanilla Extract Recipe in Mason Jars

Why DIY Vanilla Extract Makes a Great Gift

DIY vanilla extract is one of those homemade gifts that feels both thoughtful and practical. Unlike many seasonal gifts that end up tucked away in a drawer, vanilla extract is something people can actually use year-round for baking, coffee, desserts, and holiday recipes.

Because homemade vanilla extract improves with time, it also feels extra special and luxurious compared to store-bought versions. Pairing it with a pretty bottle, handwritten tag, or baking accessories turns it into an easy high-end gift without spending a fortune.

This DIY gift idea is especially perfect for:

  • Christmas gifts
  • Teacher gifts
  • Hostess gifts
  • Neighbor gifts
  • Bridal shower gifts
  • Housewarming baskets
  • DIY wedding favors

The best part? You can make several bottles at once, making this a budget-friendly homemade gift idea for the holidays.

The Back Story…

Since 2014, I’ve been crafting my own Vanilla Extract, and now I’m thrilled to guide you through the process of making homemade vanilla extract.

This journey began during my time in Oregon, a state known for its deep appreciation of natural living. An interesting twist to this story emerged when I noticed a family member using imitation extract, which left me intrigued.

My innate curiosity prompted me to ask, “Why not use real vanilla extract?” Their answer opened my eyes to their personal journey of recovery from alcoholism and their commitment to avoiding products containing alcohol. This person’s dedication to a natural, alcohol-free lifestyle left me pondering why they weren’t using the best all-natural product available?

This experience reaffirmed the importance of asking questions rather than making assumptions, and it led me to dive into researching how to make Vanilla Extract.

As I embarked on this journey, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Was it a complicated process, or was it something everyone could easily do? Could making Vanilla Extract be a shortcut to creating a homemade, natural alternative to store-bought options, aligning with our fast-paced modern world?

Although I consider myself a “work smarter, not harder” enthusiast, I also have a stubborn streak when it comes to acquiring new skills. I wanted to see if I could do it myself. I value my time and, like many, have a preference for short and sweet recipes.

Best Bottles and Jars to Use for DIY Vanilla Extract

One of the easiest ways to elevate homemade vanilla extract is by choosing the right bottle or jar. Small glass containers instantly make this DIY project feel more polished and gift-worthy.

Some of the best bottle options include:

  • Small swing-top glass bottles
  • Mason jars
  • Amber glass bottles
  • Clear apothecary-style jars
  • Mini liquor bottles
  • Cork-top bottles

If you plan to gift your DIY vanilla extract, smaller 4-ounce to 8-ounce bottles work especially well and allow you to make multiple gifts from one batch.

For a cozy, vintage-inspired look, pair your bottles with:

  • Twine or ribbon
  • Kraft paper labels
  • Wax seals
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Mini wooden tags

Clear bottles also allow the beautiful vanilla beans to show through, making the gift feel even more homemade and artisan.

Printable Gift Tags for Homemade Vanilla Extract

Adding a printable gift tag is an easy way to make homemade vanilla extract feel extra intentional and personalized. You can attach tags with ribbon, baker’s twine, or even a small sprig of dried greenery for a cozy holiday look.

Here are a few simple gift tag sayings you can use:

  • “Made with Love and Vanilla Beans”
  • “The Secret Ingredient is Homemade”
  • “Homemade Vanilla Extract”
  • “For Cozy Baking Days”
  • “Ready Just in Time for Holiday Baking”
  • “A Little Homemade Sweetness”

You can also include simple instructions on the back of the tag explaining:

  • when the vanilla extract will be ready to use
  • how to shake the bottle occasionally
  • storage instructions

If you have a Cricut or printable label paper, this is also a great project for creating custom waterproof labels.

DIY Vanilla Extract Budget Breakdown

Homemade vanilla extract may seem expensive upfront, but making multiple bottles at once can actually save money compared to purchasing premium store-bought vanilla extract.

Here’s a general cost breakdown:

  • Vanilla beans: $15–$30
  • Vodka or bourbon: $10–$25
  • Glass bottles or jars: $1–$5 each
  • Labels and ribbon: optional

Depending on bottle size, one batch can often make several gifts, helping lower the overall cost per bottle.

Compared to high-end store-bought pure vanilla extract, DIY vanilla extract can be a more affordable option while also feeling far more personal and handmade.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and Sterilize the Mason Jar: Begin by dipping the mason jar in boiling water and allowing it to cool completely on the counter before adding the ingredients.
  2. Prepare the Vanilla Beans: Cut the 10 vanilla beans down the middle, leaving the top 1 inch of the bean uncut and connected.
  3. Assemble in the Mason Jar: Place the prepared vanilla beans in the clean, cooled mason jar.
  4. Add Vodka: Fill the mason jar with vodka until the beans are completely submerged.
  5. Store and Wait: Seal the jar with a lid and store it in a cool, dark space, such as your pantry or spice cabinet. Let it sit for 3 months. Every other week, gently tip the mason jar upside down and right side up. Continue this process throughout the 3-month waiting period.
  6. Transfer to Smaller Jars: After the 3 months have passed, pour the mixture into smaller jars. Some people strain the vanilla extract seeds; this is optional.
  7. Usage Tip: Keep in mind that this homemade vanilla extract is stronger than store-bought varieties. You only need to use half the amount called for in recipes.

Learning how to make homemade vanilla extract is an enriching experience. I’ve been making large batches of this extract in quart mason jars for years, not only for personal use but also as thoughtful gifts during the holidays and at special gatherings.

It was the perfect wedding favor at our celebration!

This simple yet valuable recipe ensures you always have a supply of organic, all-natural vanilla extract, saving you money in the long run. Don’t hesitate to share this delightful gift with your loved ones, and wow them with your homemade creation. After all, who can resist the allure of organic, all-natural vanilla extract, especially considering the high cost of the store-bought alternatives?

Best Vanilla Beans to Use

The type of vanilla bean you choose can slightly change the flavor profile of your homemade vanilla extract. While there are several varieties available, a few are especially popular for DIY vanilla projects.

Madagascar Vanilla Beans

These are the most traditional and commonly used vanilla beans. They have a rich, classic vanilla flavor that works beautifully in baking.

Tahitian Vanilla Beans

Tahitian beans are slightly more floral and fruity, making them great for desserts and sweeter recipes.

Ugandan Vanilla Beans

Ugandan vanilla beans tend to have a bold, deep flavor with slightly chocolatey notes.

Grade B vanilla beans are often recommended for homemade extract because they are specifically intended for extracting flavor and are usually more affordable than gourmet-grade beans.

How Long Does Homemade Vanilla Extract Last???

One of the best things about homemade vanilla extract is that it has an incredibly long shelf life. When stored properly in a cool, dark place, homemade vanilla extract can last for years.

Most homemade vanilla extract is ready to use after about:

  • 8–12 weeks minimum
  • 6 months for stronger flavor
  • 1 year for the richest flavor

Over time, the flavor actually continues to deepen and improve.

To help preserve your vanilla extract:

  • Store bottles away from direct sunlight
  • Keep lids tightly sealed
  • Shake occasionally during the infusion process

You can also continue topping off the bottle with alcohol as you use it and reuse the vanilla beans for an extended period of time.

DIY Gift Basket Ideas Using Homemade Vanilla Extract

Homemade vanilla extract pairs beautifully with other cozy kitchen and baking-themed gifts. Creating a full DIY gift basket can make the present feel even more thoughtful and curated.

  • Tea towels
  • Wooden spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Coffee syrups
  • Recipe cards
  • Baking mixes
  • Local honey
  • Mugs
  • Hot cocoa mixes
  • Sourdough starter kits

For a cozy holiday aesthetic, place everything inside:

  • A wooden crate
  • Wire basket
  • Vintage bowl
  • Small baking dish
  • Cutting board

This type of gift basket works especially well for teachers, neighbors, newlyweds, or anyone who loves baking and cozy home decor.
