Supplies to make Easy DIY Lightweight Concrete Planters

I don’t know about you but I just love a DIY project that has a small shopping supply list. This is a very budget friendly project that can fit any budget.

These stylish new planters we made for our front porch. We randomly found one day browsing at Aldi and they were  only $15 each. This seemed like a steal to me and I just loved the shape of them! You can choose to do small or large concrete planters for the space you have in mind.

I wasn’t able to find these exact pots but I did find a great list of options that are a similar size. Remember don’t get too caught up in the color of the pots because we are going to paint them anyway.

Pay most attention to the price, size and style you are looking for! That is why this DIY project works for any budget. You get to choose how much you spend on your pots. Which is the biggest expense of this project!

How to make Easy DIY Lightweight Concrete Planters

Step-by-Step Guide too make Lightweight Concrete Planters:

  1. Select your stylish planters you want to makeover that are a lightweight plastic. That is the key in these being lightweight and easy to move.
  2. Lightly sand the entire surface of your plastic planters with a 220 grit sanding sponge. This grit will still leave you with a smooth finish and only lightly rough the surface to give your paint something to stick to.
  3. Rinse off your plastic planters with water to make sure you get all the dust off.
  4. Let all sides of the containers dry completely for a couple hours before you move onto painting
  5. Set your planters on a plastic bag to minimize overspray.
  6. Get your spray paint of choice. I chose the Krylon Textured Soapstone Color because it was closest to a concrete look.
  7. Follow spraying instructions on the spray can. Spray 2-3 light coats on the outside of the pot until you get the coverage you are looking for.
  8. Before your final coat dries you want to dust some baking soda all over the pot randomly. This will really give it that authentic concrete look once dried.(optional step)
  9. Let dry completely until the next day before you brush off excess baking soda that didn’t stick. Not all the baking soda will stick and that is ok. This will make sure it gets that authentic concrete look not completely covered in baking soda.
  10. For outdoor use, if there is no drainage hole drill 2-3 before you plant your plants.
  11. Add you plant of choice and enjoy your pot for many years to come!

PRO TIP #1: If you absolutely love the look you’ve achieved and want to really make sure it lasts for many years. Get a matte finish clear spray paint and do 2 coats all over your planters.
