Have you ever wondered how to transform a simple ball of yarn into a beautiful crochet blanket? Crocheting a baby blanket not only gives you a chance to express your creativity but also allows you to create something special for the little ones in your life.

Whether it’s a snuggly gift for your next baby shower or a personal project for your own child, this blanket is sure to bring warmth and joy. As you gather your materials and prepare to dive into this project, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. But fear not! By the end of this blog, you’ll have the confidence and skills to create a stunning baby blanket from scratch.

I would like to preface this and let you know this was my very first crochet project and I didn’t use a pattern. The width and length I just winged the size I wanted it to be and went from there. I was able to successfully make my daughter her first blanket and she loves it! It also turned out super cute and this beginner-friendly baby blanket was a lot easier than I expected it to be.

Now it’s time for you to make your first easy project DIY Crochet Baby Blanket!!!

Choosing the Right Yarn and Tools

When starting your crochet journey, selecting the right type of yarn and tools are essential. The beauty of crochet lies in its simplicity, but the materials you choose can significantly impact the final result. For a baby blanket, opt for soft, hypoallergenic yarn that’s gentle against a baby’s delicate skin. Cotton and acrylic yarn blends are excellent choices, as they offer warmth, durability, and easy care.

Next, you’ll need the right crochet hook size. A size H (5mm) or I (5.5mm) smaller hook is typically ideal for beginners and works well with worsted weight yarn. If you’re unsure which mm hook to choose, many yarn labels provide recommendations based on the yarn weight. Additionally, don’t forget to grab a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in your ends once your blanket is complete.

Understanding yarn weight and gauge is also crucial for achieving the desired size and look of your blanket. Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows per inch, which can vary based on the yarn and mm crochet hook size used. As a beginner, you might want to practice on a small swatch to ensure you’re on the right track before diving into your blanket. I used 3 skeins of yarn for my blanket size.

Learning Basic Crochet Stitches

Now that you have your materials ready, it’s time to learn some basic crochet stitches! The two fundamental stitches for creating your baby blanket are The Slip Knot and Chain Stitch and The Double Crochet Stitch. The chain stitch forms the foundation of your project, while the double crochet stitch provides the texture and bulkiness that will make your blanket cozy.

To begin, create a slip knot and chain the desired stitch count length for your blanket. As a general rule, a baby blanket can range from 30 to 40 inches wide. I made mine about 30” wide. Once you’ve completed your chain, it’s time to work the double crochet back down your started chain. Make sure to reference the videos I linked when you need them.

As you become more comfortable with these simple stitches, you can experiment with different stitch patterns and color change to personalize your blanket. The videos linked above are a fantastic resource that visually demonstrates these beginner stitches, making it easier for you to follow along and learn at your own pace.

Once I had all the basics stitches down and practiced some in those first two rows I mentioned above. I started incorporating the Cobblestone Stitch into my blanket. This is the exact step by step video tutorial Cobblestone Stitch Video I used to make my little ones baby blanket. Learning this stitch was not hard at all and it just kept having a pattern repeat for each new row. It also gave this gorgeous texture that she loves messing with still to this day!

Putting It All Together: Completing Your Blanket

With your foundational skills in place, it’s time to put everything together and finish your DIY crochet baby blanket! As you continue working in rows, remember to keep your tension consistent—this will ensure that your blanket has an even appearance.

When you’re nearing the desired length (usually around 30 to 40 inches), it’s time to consider adding a border for a polished finish. A simple single crochet stitch border can give your blanket a neat edge and prevent it from curling. To add the border, simply work single crochets around the entire blanket, ensuring to place three single crochets in each corner st (st=stitch) to keep the corners sharp.

Finally, once you’ve finished your blanket, take a moment to weave in any loose ends with your yarn needle and give it a good wash to soften the fibers. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of completing your first crochet project, and gifting or using this blanket will surely bring a smile to your face.

Bonus: I went ahead and used these same stitches and created a matching pillow for the blanket. I used an old pillow insert I wasn’t using anymore and made a front panel and back panel. Then stitched the edges together and add a few extra rows of stitches and made a pillow! If I can do this so can you!!!
