- Wood – Choosing a more rot-resistant type of wood like cedar or redwood is ideal but more expensive. Pine won’t last as long but it is a more readily available and affordable option.
- Screws – Use rust-resistant outdoor screws to ensure durability.
- Weed Barrier Fabric – Lining the bottom with this will help prevent weeds from growing up through the soil.
- Soil and Compost – A nutrient-rich mix provides the best growing conditions for your plants.
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
Having the right tools on hand will make assembly quicker and easier:
- Drill with Bits – For fastening screws or bolts into the panels.
- Measuring Tape – Ensures precise cuts and proper alignment.
- Level – Helps keep the garden bed straight and even.
- Miter Saw (if cutting wood) – Use a miter saw to trim panels to size if needed.
- Safety Goggles – Protect yourself while cutting and assembling.
- Hammer – This will help you set the beds level in place
- Small Shovel – Use your small shovel to dig out ground that is unlevel so you can adjust your modular beds level.
- Speed Square/Framing Angle – This will help when measuring and drawing your straight line to cut your pieces square.

Step-by-Step for Building your Modular Raised Garden Bed
Step 1: Cut all of your 2×6 modular bed pieces to 24” in length.
Step 2: Assemble 2 boards making an L shape using two outdoor screws in each corner. You will make 16 of these L shape pieces.
Step 3: Assemble two L shape pieces together to form your square bed frames using two outdoor screws in each corner again.
Step 4: Each planter box will be about 5.5” tall. This is a good time to start stacking your boxes to see how tall you want them. For ours we stacked two boxes to make ours that are 11” tall.
Step 5: Use 2×6 scrap pieces that are 2” longer than the total height of your box. Attach with one outdoor screw into each box level you have for that box from the inside.
Step 6: Flip your box over and it is ready to be set in place. The extra 2” from the 2×6 is to help your box sink into the and not move over time.
Step 7: Arrange your boxes in the location and configuration you want. Last step is to make sure they are all level and add supports if needed for slopes
