My husband and I were in the same boat and loved certain pieces of clothing our little one constantly wore. We couldn’t stand to get rid of them, but had no idea how to cherish them at first.
Keeping them in a box just wasn’t an option for us.
We saw a company making these mom and dad applique sweaters, but unfortunately the price tag was very steep. Not only did you have to pay to ship the items to them, you also paid a pretty penny for the service of them making your sweater.
It was looking like it would be anywhere from $60-$80 per sweater, so instead we figured out how to do it ourselves for a fraction of the cost with just a basic sewing machine!
Now, we are sharing this Easy DIY Applique Sweater Tutorial with you!
Supplies needed to make your DIY Applique Sweater:
- Sweater or hoodie of your choice
- 3-4 outfits per sweater
- Heat n Bond
- Thread in your preferred color
- Scissors
- Hot Iron
- Sewing machine

DIY Applique Sweater step-by-step instructions:
- Choose Your Sweater: Select a blank sweater or hoodie in your preferred style and color. Amazon offers a wide variety at affordable prices.
- Prep Your Sweater: Pre-wash your sweaters and tumble dry them to ensure they’re clean and ready for customization.
- Select Your Letters: Decide the word of your choice you want your sweaters to say, whether it’s “MAMA,” “DADA,” “MOM,” “DAD,” or something else. Get creative!
- Trace and Cut: Print out your letter stencils and trace them onto the fabric pieces you’ve chosen. Cut out the letters carefully.
- Apply Heat n Bond: Iron your letters onto the Heat n Bond and cut them out, following the letter edge..
- Iron on Letters: Position your letters on the front of your sweatshirt and iron them in place.
- Stitch Letters: Use a straight stitch as your first stitch to tack down the edge of your letters, about 1/8″ from the outside edge. This stitch won’t actually look like a zig zag stitch when you are all finished.
- Tight Zig-Zag Stitch: Choose a tight zigzag stitch to create a thick finished looking border edge around the perimeter of your applique pieces.
- Wear with Pride: Put on your new sweater and proudly showcase your DIY creation! You earned those letters!
How long will it take to make a DIY Applique Sweater?
This project is not only easy and fun, but also incredibly affordable and fast to make. Each sweater took me about an hour to complete, and the total cost for supplies was less than $50 for both.
These personalized sweaters also make fantastic gifts, whether for grandparents with “NANA” or “PAPA” or for your child with their own name. Adjust the letter sizes as needed to fit your jacket space and desired message. This kinda gift would put anyone in a good mood!
